Confessions of a 30yr old Valentine’s Day Virgin

I have a confession I am 30 years old and have never had a Valentine. That’s right, I’m a 30 year old Valentine’s Day Virgin! I’ve never received any of the cliche cheesy heart-shaped jewelry and the only flowers I have ever gotten on this Hallmark holiday are from my Dad. But let’s get one thing clear I’m totally fine with it!

Don’t get me wrong, I haven’t always been fine with it. I used to long for a romantic V-Day, filled with roses and champagne. But for the longest time I was a very insecure person and with that I dated guys that were, to put it bluntly, losers. And when you are not confident in yourself or what you have to offer the world you then think that these losers are the best you can get. I mean just to prove this point. I had an on again off again “relationship” (and I use that word very loosely) for 5 yrs with a man who always thought my birthday was March 15…….. for the record its May 29th. So I didn’t expect the romance to be rolled out on Valentine’s Day or any other day for that matter. I’m telling you all about this not to have you feel sorry for me, but to see that going through these terrible relationships as in turn, never having a Valentine are all things that ending up driving me to better myself. I made it a goal to learn to LOVE myself, and to find value in what I brought to the table. Once I found that love I found I didn’t have a Valentine for a whole different reason…… I REFUSE TO SETTLE.

After finally breaking away from the perpetual chain of bad dates, douchebag guys and insecurities. I took a step back to find a love for myself that I never had before. As my confidence grew, I started to truly realize what I deserved. I decided to take some time away from relationships to focus on my career and grow my brand. In that time I found my passion for sharing my stories, style, and my personal growth journey through the blog. Now, don’t get me wrong during this break I did date here and there but it is amazing how your standards change when you learn to LOVE YOURSELF! I no longer longed for the cliche Valentine’s Day date. I didn’t want to spend my Valentine’s Day with just anyone, like someone I met off of some random dating site. If I’m going to break my Valentine’s Day cherry it needs to be with someone fucking good! Now that I know what I want and deserve in a relationship, I refuse to waste my time with anything less than that!

So to no surprise I’m spending the holiday without a Valentine again this year and I couldn’t be happier. I’m so thankful what these 30yrs of solo Vdays has taught me and how it led me to ultimately fall in love with something so much more important than a silly holiday …… Myself. And in my opinion, that’s the best Valentine a girl could have!

Galentine’s Day Cookie Recipe

Happy Galentine’s Day! Today I’m getting into the spirit of the holiday and baking some soft, chewy, adorable sugar cookies for my girlfriends! This is such a sweet gift with a personal touch since you can customize the decorations for each person. Plus after they taste these sweet treats, they are guaranteed to be a hit that they expect for years to come!

Ingredients

1 cup butter, room temperature

1 cup of sugar

1 ½ teaspoons vanilla

1 egg

1 teaspoon water (a bit more if needed)

3 cups flour.

TIP: If you want your cookies chewy and soft, you can add an additional few tablespoons for flour ….. I added 3 extra tablespoons to mine.

1 ½ teaspoons baking powder

¼ t salt

Cream butter, sugar, and vanilla.

Add egg and water. Beat until light and fluffy.

In a new bowl, combine flour, baking powder, and salt. Sift together.

Blend dry mixture into creamed mixture, divide dough in half. Wrap each half in plastic wrap and chill for one hour.

When you are ready to roll your dough, make sure and flour your working surface. If your dough feels too sticky, add a little bit of flour. If your dough seems to dry, add a tiny bit of water and kneed. Roll your dough on the floured surface with a rolling pin (or if you don’t have a rolling pin, like me, a bottle of champagne works great too!) Roll it out to about a quarter inch thick.

Bake at 375 degrees for 6-8 minutes. Watch them carefully. Take out of the oven before edges turn brown.

Icing:

Start with 2 cups of powdered sugar. Add 1 teaspoon vanilla and 1 tablespoon melted butter. Stir in teaspoons of milk one at a time until you reach desired consistency. Add food coloring to get desired colors! Put in a piping bag (or a ziplock bag) cut the corner and start icing!

Fighting Winter Skin with Dermalogica.

The winter months can be so harsh on your skin. Your complexion can get dry, irritated and for some people, the winter months mean an increase in breakouts. Why does our skin act this way in the cold? You would think that it would be calmer now than in the summer because you aren’t sweating and creating all of that skin congestion! Well, in fact during these cold months you are still getting skin congestion but it doesn’t clear up as fast because the sun isn’t out as much. Vitamin D actually helps relieve breakouts. Who Knew Right?!?! After learning this information and with my being super sick all last week the LAST thing I’d want is to somehow be MORE congested than I already am!! lol

Thankfully my friends over at Dermalogica sent over some of their skin care staples to help me get thru these blustery winter months with even better skin than I had coming into it! I’ve been using these products for about 2 weeks now and I can honestly tell you that my skin feels so clean after using them. It’s an easy 5 steps regime that has completely helped keep my skin in check during this polar vortex.

Step 1: The Pre Cleanse

I have been pre-cleansing for years! How are you supposed to get the benefits from a great cleanser if you don’t take your makeup fully off first! If you don’t pre-cleanse and remove all of your makeup than all you are doing is just rubbing it around your face and not actually cleaning anything!

This is super easy to use because you first apply it on a dry face and then after massaging it all over you then add water! After you add the water you it transforms from an oil based feel to a gentle lather and you after a quick rinse you are ready for step 2!

Step 2: Special Cleansing Gel

Now that you make up is all removed it is time to actually cleanse the skin. This gel cleanser is super gentile and a little goes a LONG way. Use this as you would any other facial cleanser.

Step 3: The Daily Microfoliant

This is my favorite of all of the products. I’m sure that you have been told at some point that you shouldn’t exfoliate every day. Well, this Microfoliant is gentle enough to use every day to ensure that you have smooth skin, combat that wintery dry, flakey skin and also helps fight signs of aging. I only use this one during my night time routine before bed.

What makes this product so cool is that its actually a powder! Just a little dash of the powder, mix with a bit of water in your hands and start scrubbing.

Step 4: Dynamic Skin Recovery SPF 50

This broad spectrum anti-aging moisturizer is perfect to add to your morning routine. It’s a fantastic moisturizer that isn’t too sticky to thick for daytime wear and the SPF 50 is perfect to layer under your makeup. I use this one in the morning only and use thicker moisturizing creams and oils for at night.

Step 5: Stress Positive Eye Lift

With the late nights and early mornings of working on the blog, this product has been a life saver for me. It decreases dark circles and de-puff tired, stressed eyes!

** Dermalogica did gift me all of these products, but this post and reviews are not sponsored at all! All of the opinions are my own.

Walk on the wild side!

I’m having some serious FOMO right now. Seeing all of my fave blogger babes heading to NYFW and all of the show invites hitting my email just makes me wish I was in NYC! I would love to be there but unfortunately I’m skipping this seasons shows and plan on hitting the ground running again in September!

But that doesn’t mean I can’t bring a bit of NYFW FASHION to the Midwest….. even in a KwikTrip! This snakeskin printed skirt from Luv Me More instantly makes me feel like I’m ready to walk the read carpet! It’s perfect for dressing up or down, like I did with a belted bf blazer and combat boots.

The animal print trend is in full force this season but it has evolved. While you instantly think of leopard print and yes, leopard print is a wardrobe staple. The animal prints that are hitting the trends most right now are snake skin and tiger print! So grab your animal prints and take a walk on the wild side with me:)
